职场英语里有趣的7个外来语表达

1. De facto 事实上
拉丁语表达de facto用作形容词时意思是actual，“事实上”;而用作副词时的意思是in practice，“实践上”。
When the teacher failed to respond to the student's request to submitting the homework assignment a day late, the student assumed this was de facto approval of his request for an extension.当老师没有对学生要求晚一天交作业的请求做回应时，学生认为这个请求已经获得实际上的'批准了。
另外，在法律术语里，de facto通常和de jure(法律上)相对。因此，某事或者某处理原则要么是“事实上的、实际上的”(de facto)，要么是法律上的(de jure)。
2. Vis-à-Vis 面对面地/与...相比
来自法语，原生用法表示face to face，面对面。英语里更多的用法是介词，表示compared with或者in relation to，即“和...相比”、“与...有关系”。
面对面：
I didn't think he was around, but suddenly I found myself vis-à-vis my boss.我没想到老板在附近，突然就面对面了。
和...相比：
Bill would make a strong candidate, vis-à-vis John, who was not qualified at all.作为候选人，Bill比John强太多了，John一点不称职。
3. Status quo 现状
这个拉丁词组意思是the current or existing state of affairs，事物当前状态。
When she completed an additional work report and thoroughly researched her sources, Gina's boss appreciated that she'd gone beyond the status quo.Gina完成了一份额外的工作报告并彻底把她的资料研究透了，老板赞赏她把工作做在了前面。
If they continue to make small changes in their business based on the situation in the market, they can maintain status quo.如果他们针对当前市场状况，持续对经营做出小变化，就能保持现有态势。
4. Cul-de-sac 死胡同一个标准的cul-de-sac
这个表达来自英国那些说法语的贵族们(熟悉英国历史的同学应该知道英法之间的纠结)。它的字面意思是bottom of a sack，“麻袋底部”，引申为dead-end street，不通往任何其他街道的死胡同。Cul-de-sac也用于比喻没有结果或陷入绝境的行动。

This was the cul-de-sac the year kept driving me toward: men and women would always be at odds.这就是那一年不断驱策我前进的困境：男人和女人总是有争执。
5. Per se 本质上的
同样来自拉丁语，表示by itself或者intrinsically，自身、本质上的。
The law makes drunk driving illegal per se.法律规定了酒驾本身就是非法。
6. Ad hoc 特别设置的
源自拉丁语的Ad hoc意思是formed or created with a specific purpose，指为某个目的而特别设置的、临时的。
The World Bank’s board on Friday ordered an ad hoc group to discuss the fate of President Paul Wolfowitz.(CNN)世界银行董事会周五成立了一个特设小组，来讨论行长保罗·沃尔福威茨的命运问题。
7. Savoir faire (社交场合)处事说话的才干、能力
来自法语，savoir是know，懂得的意思，同一词源的词比如sapient，睿智的。Faire是do的意思，和fact是一个拉丁词源。它们组合起来就是know how to do，即在社交场合，知道怎么做合适的意思。
Jackie Kennedy's grace and poise is an example of savoir faire.杰奎琳肯尼迪的优雅和仪态是社交能力的展现。
