茱蒂从小就一直生活在孤儿院里，是她不得不负担起许多沉重的工作，体会不到普通女孩拥有的家庭乐趣。但是有一天，有一位好心的'先生决定资助她上大学，彻底改变了她的生活。茱蒂心里十分感谢这先生，发自内心的坚持每一段时间写信给这位先生。由于这位先生不知何名，但是特别高，茱蒂便叫这位先生“长腿先生”。
茱蒂对外界的一切都十分感兴趣，对未知的事物充满了好奇。尽管是一件微不足道的小事，茱蒂也能从中找到乐趣。茱蒂为了能与他人沟通，便努力地读书，汲取知识。在每一封信中都与长腿先生分享自己大学生活的趣事与烦恼。茱蒂在信中无论自己的缺点还是优点都毫无保留的告诉长腿叔叔。因为他把长腿叔叔当成了她唯一的亲人，她珍惜这个亲人，也珍惜这来之不易的生活，心中充满了感激。
