A Wolf had got a bone stuck in his throat and in theGREatest agony ran up and down, beseeching everyanimal he met to relieve him, at the same timehinting at a very handsome reward to the successfuloperator. A Crane, moved by his entreaties andpromises, ventured her long neck down the Wolf'sthroat, and drew out the bone. She then modestlyfor the promised reward. To which the Wolf, grinningand showing his teeth, replied with seemingindignation: "Ungreateful creature! to ask for anyother reward than that you have put you head into awolf's jaws and brought it safe again!"
Those who are charitable only in the hope of a return must not be surprised if in their dealingswith evil men, they meet with more jeers than thanks.
