《寂静的春天》英文读后感(通用12篇)

  《寂静的春天》英文读后感 1

“There was a strange stillness. The birds, for example—where had they gone?” “The feeding stations in the backyards were deserted. The few birds seen anywhere were moribund; they trembled violently and could not fly. It was spring without voices.” “On the farms the hens brooded, but no chicks hatched.” “The roadsides, once so attractive, were now lined with browned and withered vegetation as though swept by fire. These, too, were silent, deserted by all living things. Even the streams were now lifeless.”

This is a strange scene described by Rachel Carson, who is regarded as “the mother of modern environmental protection movement”。 Silent Spring is her representative work which lighted the fire of environmental protection in America and the whole world. Before 1960s, no books or magazines talked about things like environment and ecosystem. Such a phenomenon means that environmental protection had not come to people’s mind and the social consciousness. Indeed, the main opinion in human society from the very past about nature is to “set war against” or “conquer” it. In fact, many of human’s progresses are made on the base of such opinion. Rachel Carson was the first person who doubted the correctness of the belief and brought the topic under focus.

In Silent Spring, Carson described a miserable village which was dying under the using of DDT. The village used to be prosperous and beautiful. “In spring, white clouds of bloom drifted above the green fields. In autumn, oak and maple and birch set up a blaze of color that flamed and flickered across a backdrop of pines. Then foxed barked in the hills and deer silently crossed the fields, half hidden in the mists of the fall mornings.” She thought that with the using of variety kinds of pesticide, especially DDTs, the village suffered enormous and irreversible damage and gradually withered and died. Soon it became just like the one described in the beginning. From her fine and smooth describing, I can even feel the groan of the town. Moreover Carson also sharply pointed out that the deep-seated cause for the environmental problem is the human’s arrogance and ignorance. So she asked people to correct the attitude toward the nature and reconsidered the developing path of human being.

Carson thought that because of the antibody and differentiation, pesticides would never be completely useful. On the contrary, those more and more poisonous medicines, because of the enrichment effect, would accumulate in humans’ body. It’s quite sarcastic that we hurt ourselves much badly while hurting the others. Then she analyzed many poisonous components in pesticides. Those are all unfamiliar names except DDT, such as chlordane, chloronaphthalene, compound 497, etc.

Those things really make me feel scared. We are on the top of the food chain, and it is such a perfect and fragile system. We human beings are just part of it and we depend on all of the creatures who stay on the lower positions. It is so hard and ridiculous to try to match the nature. ”Only in the state does man have a rational existence.” Every species have their value to be on this world. Then no one knows what would happened if we force them to disappear. For example, let’s imagine the food chain as a meticulously made castle built by billions of little blocks and we human beings are the top one. There might be several tiny blocks on the bottom which you think is useless and dispensable. But what would happen if we take them away? Perhaps nothing happened, and perhaps the whole castle ruined.

Destruction is always much easier than recovery, not counting those incurable ones. Humans always think that we are much cleverer than the other animals, so we become more and more conceited and firmly believe that we are the king. We didn’t see that the nature is so magical and knows how to revenge. The pay back is much more violent and cruel. We need balance and order. The nature has its own rule. Our aim is to use it and live in harmony with it. The ecosystem is so delicate that even a tiny disturbance could lead an unexpected consequence, just like the butterfly effect.

At the last chapter, some scientists came up with other ways to solve the pest problem----biotic control. There is now a strongly running tide of interest in chemical sterility. Those sterile insects are released and mate the normal ones so that they won’t have any larva and get extinct gradually. This “solution” seems to be reasonable and helpful, but thinking about it carefully, you’ll find that it is just another way to ruin the food chain castle. Not only spring, but also summer and autumn would be still and silent in the future.

It is lucky that Rachel still kept her mind clear. She didn’t agree with the way of conquering the nature. At the very end of the book, she wrote, “The ‘control of nature’ is a phrase conceived in arrogance, born of the Neanderthal age of biology and philosophy, when it was supposed that nature exists for the convenience of man.” This sentence can be regarded as the book’s theme topic which is widely quoted in all kinds of articles about environmental protection.

Carson is a great woman and fighter. When writing the book, she was suffering from huge pain of the operation for mammary cancer. After the book was published, the widely affect brought her not honor and fortune, but fierce attack from the chemical estate. She died only one year after the book’s publishing. On the spring of 1964, the great woman passed away, but Silent Spring made her voice never silent.

The 20st century was a time that technology and economy developed rapidly, especially the 40 years after Silent Spring was published. But every spring, when flowers bloom, trees sprout, and water begins to flow, we used to recall a woman and her enduring works. We opened the window, and wonder if the spring is silent today, if it will be silent tomorrow.

  《寂静的春天》英文读后感 2

Spring gives us the impression of birds singing and flowers fragrant, full of vitality everywhere. But why does the author of this book say that spring is silent? After reading "Silent Spring", I realized that the failure to transform nature according to my own wishes has led to many problems.

Especially with the emergence of a large number of chemical drugs, not only have they generally destroyed the environment that humans rely on for survival, but they have also harmed the animals and plants that live in them, and even harmed humans themselves. However, little is known about the consequences of human behavior. In fact, what we harm is not only animals and plants, but also ourselves.

I remember one time, my mom said my grandmother had a lot of bugs at home, so she asked me to spray insecticide. After spraying, the bird I kept suddenly died. I used to think that birds died alone because they lacked freedom. Until today, I realized that I used the power of insecticides to kill insects and lively birds. If I had known this truth earlier, perhaps I could have thought of other ways. Now think about it, I might as well not keep that bird! Sorry!

In fact, in life, we are paying for the bitter wine we brew ourselves. Many of the animals and plants we like are on the brink of extinction, and even lead to frequent natural disasters, as we claim to benefit humanity. But we didnt realize that it was caused by ourselves. We should let nature and us humans help each other, and let nature serve us humans reasonably. Of course, we should also repay nature. What we want is better living resources, what we naturally want is harmonious coexistence.

If everyone could understand the importance of protecting the environment, then intelligent humans would not use those chemicals to remove pests. So is our world cleaner and more vibrant? Isnt blue sky, clear water, red flowers, green trees, and fresh air something we can have every day when we open our eyes?

  《寂静的春天》英文读后感 3

Nowadays, the term "protecting the environment" has repeatedly appeared in peoples vision and is increasingly valued. Today, I recommend a book about calling on people to protect the environment - Rachel Carsons Silent Spring.

This book was officially published in 1962, marking the beginning of the worlds environmental protection cause. The author discusses the environmental hazards of a series of chemical agents, represented by DDT, in the book. The first chapter of the book presents a small town that is lifeless and full of the smell of death, based on a hypothesis. The picture is shocking and raises the question: Where has the small town, where are the birds singing and the flowers fragrant? What deprives countless towns of the sound of spring? In the following chapters, the author presents the hazards of using chemical agents one by one with numerous examples and shocking data. And these chemicals, either directly or indirectly, affect our lives. Taking DDT as an example, hay initially contains DDT residues ranging from 7 to 8 parts per million, which are then concentrated and transferred by cows to produce milk. After this process, the DDT content in butter has increased to 65 parts per million! What would be the consequences if humans were to consume this toxic butter for a long time?

Of course, the harm of these chemicals goes beyond that. They also pollute our surface water and underground sea, making birds unable to sing and causing the ecosystem to lose balance. Drug residues have been detected in most major water systems and groundwater that we cannot see. Even if these drugs remain in the soil for ten years, they cannot be completely decomposed.

This book has no ups and downs in its storyline, and no real and tangible character images. But if we calm down, we will definitely understand how important it is to protect the environment.

  《寂静的春天》英文读后感 4

Spring is like a beautiful and holy flower, but this flower is being altered by humans.

Every morning when I wake up, the crisp singing of birds crawls into my room, and I see the lively figure of swallows and the tender buds of willow trees. But now that they have fallen, the trees no longer grow buds, the birds no longer chirp, and even the swallows cannot be seen. If my friends dont run through the oily fields, they also lack the joy of spring. The trees have already been cut down by humans, and humans are the main culprits.

As night fell over the entire earth, two people broke into a large forest. They held flashlights in one hand and baskets in the other, searching for the bird eggs that represented spring. Surprisingly, they touched a whole basket overnight. When the mother bird returned and saw that her child was missing, she felt extremely sad and must seek revenge from humans. At dawn, a group of people holding axes cut down trees as soon as they saw them, leaving the birds homeless. The children of the birds cannot be found, and their homes are gone. In order to eliminate all the birds saved, humans catch them all and sell them to major restaurants for human consumption. Unconsciously, they turn a whole forest into bare.

Due to human indiscriminate logging, the forests of the world are rapidly declining, and every morning there is no longer a harmonious atmosphere. At the end of spring, there was a group of children playing and catching shrimp in the river every day. However, since the forest was cut down, there were no shrimp in it, and the children couldnt play in the river.

In recent years, people have realized the need to protect the environment, ecology, and all existing organisms in nature. Gradually, the Earth on which we rely for survival is restoring its original appearance.

  《寂静的春天》英文读后感 5

Recently, Teacher Lv recommended me to read a book called "Silent Spring". When I got this book and looked at its title, I felt very curious.

Because spring is usually vibrant, why is it quiet? Out of curiosity, I quickly read on and wanted to quickly find the answer in the book. In fact, this book is still very profound to me. I found that there are many things inside that I cannot understand. However, some of the plot inside still left a deep impression on me. American writer Carson described a story in his book: in the mid-20th century, in pursuit of crop yield, people extensively used pesticide DDT, causing the entire food chain to be destroyed. Fish and insects live in this polluted environment, both rich in DDT in their bodies. Birds that eat these fish or insects are poisoned to death. Therefore, this spring has no trace of birds, and no bird songs can be heard. Therefore, this spring is very quiet. My question finally had an answer, but a new question popped up in my mind. Why did the author want to write this book? I quickly searched online for information, and it turned out that on a spring day, a friend of the author Carsons who worked as a forest ranger told her that there were no bird footprints this spring, and even insects rarely appeared. And the author has loved studying biology since she was young. When she heard this news, she felt very strange. So, after investigation, she found the answer and wrote this book. book

The scene depicted in it is so terrifying! I cant imagine how we would survive if there were such a day on Earth? The Earth is the home that humans, animals and plants rely on for survival. We must protect it from pollution, let birds sing every spring, and never have a quiet spring!

  《寂静的春天》英文读后感 6

The first time I heard "Silent Spring", I couldnt help but have a hint of doubt. Silent Spring? Shouldnt spring be full of vitality, with birds chirping and flowers competing for beauty? How could it be silent? With this question in mind, I opened the page of the book.

The author Rachel Carson first described a vibrant small town, where everything seemed so peaceful until humans moved in, breaking this balance. The entire spring fell silent. Later, Carson raised a question: "What exactly made the spring in many American towns so quiet?" In subsequent articles, Carson gave the answer - it was humans.

This answer was both expected and unexpected. Carson gave a series of examples of this. Criticized how humans in the 1940s gradually pushed spring towards silence. Human beings constantly develop and use pesticides, which cause devastating impacts on organisms. Carson expressed the view that "they are called insecticides, but more precisely, they should be called biocides.".

At that time, economists were willing to destroy the ecosystem in order to make profits. And farmers believe that this will only eliminate insects and weeds. I didnt expect that I would ultimately suffer. These seemingly absurd things have indeed happened.

This inevitably reminds me of our current situation, environmental pollution. The pollution of the environment may not seem to have much to do with us, its just that there is a lot of smog, but its not like that. The pollution of the environment is related to everyone. Everyone should take action to protect the environment. Otherwise, it will only be oneself who will be hurt.

We are in an equal state with animals and plants. Environmental protection is what we should do now. Only in this way can the Earth recover to its original state and humanity overcome its current predicament. Lets take action together, environmental protection!

  《寂静的春天》英文读后感 7

When I saw the title "Silent Spring", I had a question in my heart: why is spring silent? I started reading this book with this question in mind.

This book mainly discusses the problem of pesticide abuse in society at that time, as well as the various negative impacts of pesticide use on nature.

Originally, people sprayed various pesticides on the plants in the farm to prevent insects and weeds. Pests have died, their natural enemies have also been poisoned, rivers and land have been polluted, and there are no birds singing, posing a serious threat to human survival. Insects that people want to eliminate have developed drug resistance, and they are increasingly appearing in large numbers.

Since the beginning of pesticide production, "Conquering nature" has become the slogan of most people. Nature is only the object that people conquer, not the object of harmonious coexistence and protection, and no one has doubted the correctness of this statement.

Until the author Rachel Carson, with her extraordinary courage and perseverance, devoted herself to the study of the hazards of DDT and wrote this book. Most companies producing chemical drugs are trying to prevent the publication and distribution of this book, and many people who profit from environmental pollution accuse it of being sensational and too extreme. However, through her unremitting efforts, DDT was finally banned from use.

Nowadays, almost no one uses chemical pesticides anymore, but instead uses natural enemies to control the number of pests. But now there are still many environmental pollution problems waiting for us to solve, and we need to develop the habit of protecting the environment.

Taking care of the environment means taking care of ourselves.

  《寂静的春天》英文读后感 8

After reading half of Rachel Carsons "Silent Spring", I have some feelings.

The first "fable of tomorrow" in the book is about the authors imagination of a beautiful town in the United States, where the destruction of nature and the reasons for peoples illness occur after the arrival of residents. In fact, the whole book is explaining a fact: protecting the environment is protecting oneself.

I think nature has given humanity countless gifts, but its not that humans are still unrestrained in demanding more from it. And it also disrupts the laws of nature, which not only puts humans at risk of resource depletion, shortened lifespan, and frequent diseases. Most of the book revolves around chemical preparations, mainly pesticides.

Looking at China, it is not only pesticides that pollute the environment, but also the daily discharge of various rudimentary factories that pollute the river water. Excessive logging, extensive coal mining, emissions of exhaust gases, and the use of heavy metals all pose great risks to China.

We should start by taking care of the environment by never littering or wasting food, as the flowers of our motherland. We should study hard and become pillars of the country, making outstanding contributions in protecting the environment. And always remind those around you to take care of the environment.

I hope "Silent Spring" can inspire more peoples deep thinking. For the sake of humanity and our mother earth, we must always remember that "protecting the environment is protecting humanity.".

  《寂静的春天》英文读后感 9

Why is the beautiful town shrouded in misty shadows of death everywhere? What makes the town so silent: no beautiful flowers, no songs of insects and birds, no fast flowing streams

The reason why I say that killing insects is equivalent to killing animals is because in the 20th century, people widely used insecticides to spray plants to prevent insects and birds from damaging plants by biting. But these ignorant people never imagined that insecticides would destroy the entire food chain of nature. Insecticides enter the bodies of animals and plants through various means, invade the soil, pour into the ocean, and may eventually destroy the entire earth. However, humans only focus on their own immediate happiness and spray pesticides recklessly, leading to increasingly quiet spring.

This is a very reflective book, although it mentions many chemicals that I dont know about. I instinctively know that these substances are only helpful for some things, but the harm outweighs the benefit. Our food chain is destroyed as a result, and our land becomes lifeless.

The 21st century is developed, and I just hope that insecticides dont exist in this world, because more and more information shows that insecticides are harmful to the human body, causing various diseases and even shortening human life. I believe that the technologically advanced 21st century will invent more insecticides that do not kill birds, and give us humans a beautiful and healthy home.

This book is one of the only writers in the 20th century who knew how to cherish the Earth, Rachel. Carsons Silent Spring. Rachel Carson, we support you!

  《寂静的春天》英文读后感 10

When I see the title "Silent Spring", I think there is a question: why does spring remain silent? It is precisely this question that led me to start reading this book.

This book mainly discusses the problem of pesticide abuse in society at that time, as well as the various negative factors that pesticides can have on nature.

It has been proven that people spray various insecticides on farm plants to prevent insects and weeds. Pests die, their natural enemies are poisoned, rivers are polluted, land is polluted, there are no birds singing, and human survival is seriously threatened. The insects that people want to eliminate have become resistant and their numbers are increasing.

Since the beginning of pesticide production, "Conquering nature" has become the slogan of most people. Nature is only the object of peoples conquest, not the object of harmonious coexistence and protection. No one doubts the correctness of this statement.

Until Rachel Carson devoted his courage and perseverance to studying the hazards of DDT and wrote this book. Most chemical companies are trying to stop this publication, and many people who profit from environmental pollution accuse it of being sensational and extreme. However, through her unremitting efforts, DDT was finally banned.

Nowadays, almost no one can use chemical pesticides anymore, and more natural enemies are needed to control the number of pests. But there are still many environmental pollution management problems waiting for us to solve, and we need to develop a habit of protecting the ecological environment.

Taking care of the environment is taking care of ourselves.

  《寂静的春天》英文读后感 11

In spring, the mountain flowers are blooming like white clouds drifting on the green fields. What a wonderful season spring is! This is a clip from the beginning of the book "Silent Spring". Spring should be a scene of blooming flowers and birds, in sharp contrast to the title of the book. Why is this title written?

Keep reading with this question in mind. At the end of this paragraph, the bizarre deaths of the birds were written. Not a single bird was singing, and various plants died in large areas. Later, it also affected other animals and even humans, even children were not spared, and there was silence everywhere. Unexpectedly, the culprit was actually people themselves! Because people have developed insecticides containing chemical toxins to kill so-called pests. People actually believe that insecticides are only harmful to pests, but the fact is that insecticides have become known as "insecticides".

The author wrote this book through years of observation, pointing out the serious harm of insecticides to nature at that time, and urging people to pay attention to protecting the environment and not using chemical drugs such as insecticides. Protecting the ecology and the Earth is the most important thing today, reminding people not to use chemical agents to achieve the goal of killing a species of organisms or weeds. This kind of medicine greatly extinguished birds, causing large areas of vegetation to wither and eventually everything turned into silence.

Currently, protecting the Earth is of utmost importance. Did we unintentionally destroy too much? Or did you ask too much? There is only one Earth, protecting the environment is everyones responsibility!

  《寂静的春天》英文读后感 12

Classmates, what does spring look like in your impression? Is it spring returning to the earth, birds singing and flowers fragrant, yellow orioles singing on the trees, small flowers nodding under the trees, and fish swimming by the stream? The revival of all things, the singing of birds and the dancing of swallows, what a beautiful spring! But perhaps from a certain moment on, in spring, we can no longer see the spring breeze brushing against the willows, nor hear the whispers of swallows, and the fields will become silent. What kind of catastrophic disaster should it be! What, you dont believe it? American writer Rachel Carsons Silent Spring will give us the answer.

Silent Spring mainly depicts the widespread use of DDP as the main insecticide, causing a series of environmental hazards... Mysterious and unpredictable diseases have brought down batches of cattle and sheep, and the ghosts of death are everywhere. At this point, I wonder why not ban the use of this insecticide? Not to disappoint, after the publication of this book, it caused a sensation around the world and received attention from many countries, directly banning DDP insecticides.

Unfortunately, our great hero Carson passed away in 64, but his deafening cries not only awakened America, but also the whole world.

In order to prevent plastic bags from flying everywhere, to prevent various garbage from being piled up on the streets, and to prevent the environment from being harmed again, it is time for us to protect the earth on which we rely for survival! Our beautiful and kind mother has protected us thousands of times, and now she needs us. Its our turn to protect her. Now lets take action, may we, our descendants, live forever in the blue sky and clear water!
